However, limited attention has been given to the fact that certain components of TFP growth may, in fact, have a detrimental impact on welfare. By incorporating markdowns into the decomposition model of revenue-based TFP growth, we identify three key components: the markdown effect, which captures the deviation of sectoral average markdown from unity; the reallocation effect, which reflects variations in markdowns across firms; and the technical effect, which represents physical TFP. Using firm-level data from China from 2000 to 2007, we derive several empirical insights. First, the markdown on labor has been decreasing, but this trend came to a halt after 2004—primarily due to a reduction in institutional power, rather than shifts in market power or the effects of the Lewis turning point. Second, markdowns contribute to approximately one-third of TFP growth, surpassing the impact of the reallocation effect in 2007. Additionally, the welfare loss due to markdowns accounted for 5.65% of total value added in 2007. Finally, using the reallocation effect as a reference, we assess the potential for a domestic Flying Geese pattern across regions. This study advances the theoretical discourse on markdowns and their implications for the productivity-welfare relationship, shedding new light on the complex interactions between distortions, firm dynamics, and economic welfare.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_14_geolocation_18":{"attribute_name":"地域/国名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_geolocation_place":[{"subitem_geolocation_place_text":"China"}]}]},"item_14_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"identifier_registration","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.20561/0002001297","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_14_publisher_7":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO)"}]},"item_14_rights_5":{"attribute_name":"item_14_rights_5","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_rights":"Copyrights 2025 by author(s)","subitem_rights_language":"en"}]},"item_14_subject_17":{"attribute_name":"JEL分類","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"JEL:F14 - Empirical Studies of Trade","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"JEL:L52 - Industrial Policy • Sectoral Planning Methods","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"JEL:R15 - Econometric and Input–Output Models • Other Models","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_14_version_type_15":{"attribute_name":"出版タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorAlternatives":[{"creatorAlternative":"程,文銀","creatorAlternativeLang":"ja"}],"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"CHENG,wenyin","creatorNameLang":"en"}]},{"creatorAlternatives":[{"creatorAlternative":"孟,渤","creatorAlternativeLang":"ja"}],"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Meng,Bo","creatorNameLang":"en"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Yuan,Tangjun","creatorNameLang":"en"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2025-03-11"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"IDP000959_001.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"562.8 KB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"Full-text PDF","url":"https://ir.ide.go.jp/record/2001297/files/IDP000959_001.pdf"},"version_id":"6eed31fb-b9cc-4817-9bf0-9480e2c53dc6"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"China","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Econometric model","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Social welfare","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Economic growth","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Institutional markdown","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Reallocation","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Productivity growth","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Welfare","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Flying geese","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"item_resource_type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"technical report","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_18gh"}]},"item_title":"The paradox of productivity and welfare: The role of institutional markdown","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"The paradox of productivity and welfare: The role of institutional markdown","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"14","owner":"27","path":["1737028401805"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2025-03-11"},"publish_date":"2025-03-11","publish_status":"0","recid":"2001297","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["The paradox of productivity and welfare: The role of institutional markdown"],"weko_creator_id":"27","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2025-03-11T06:35:01.316463+00:00"}
